Anatomical and biochemical changes associated with the development and germination of Araucaria angustifolia seeds Biological Sciences
Shibata, Marília; Coelho, Cileide Maria Medeiros; Schmidt, Eder Carlos; Bouzon, Zenilda Laurita; Campos, José Marcello Salabert de; Maraschin, Marcelo.
This study aimed at assessing the cell cycle, and anatomical and biochemical changes that the embryonic axis of Araucaria angustifolia undergoes during development, focusing on the maturation stage. During all development, cells exhibited intense metabolic activity with an abundance of mitochondria, lipid bodies, and vacuolated cells. The continued accumulation of starch and protein was observed by LM and TEM and indicated by spectra of FTIR. Cell differentiation of the procambium was observed with a thickening of the cell wall and the formation of resiniferous ducts. At Stage III and IV, cells exhibited structural changes such as altered or elongated mitochondria and presence of plastoglobules. These results suggest that there is a gradual transition from...

Drying and germination of cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum (willd. Ex Spreng.) K. Schum.) seeds Rev. bras. sementes
Cruz,Eniel David.
The objective of this study was to verify the effect of drying on germination of cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng) K. Schum.) seeds. Desiccation was in forced air oven, with temperature ranging from 23 to 33ºC. Sowing was carried out at 0.5cm of depth in plastic trays in sand and sawdust mixture (1:1), previously sterilized in hot water (100ºC), during 2h. Seeds were left to germinate in a laboratory with no temperature and relative humidity control, under natural light. It was quantified the seed moisture content, in four replications of 10 seeds; the germination percentage, performed during 30 days, with daily counts of the number of germinated seeds; the germination speed index; and number of days to the germination onset. The...

Drying and storage of Eugenia involucrata DC. seeds Scientia Agricola
Maluf,Angela Maria; Bilia,Denise Augusta Camargo; Barbedo,Claudio José.
The physiological quality of seeds of native species is important to produce healthy saplings and therefore guarantee the success of programs to recover disturbed vegetation. This reinforces the necessity for investigating the physiological quality of those seeds. To evaluate the effects of different drying rates on the germination, moisture content and storability of Eugenia involucrata diaspores, mature fruits collected at Mogi Guaçu, SP, Brazil had their epi- and mesocarps removed by washing and were dried at 30, 40 or 50ºC until their water content was reduced from 57% (fresh diaspores) to 13% (final drying), totaling six drying levels. In a second experiment, diaspores had their moisture content reduced from 57% to 49%, at 30ºC, totaling six drying...

Effects of desiccation on Euterpe edulis Martius seeds Biocell
Panza,Víctor; Láinez,Verónica; Maldonado,Sara; Maroder,Horacio L.
Information on desiccation sensitivity of Euterpe edulis seeds under two drying rates is presented. The sensitivity was studied during the course of germination and normal germination. The water content was evaluated for both seeds and embryos. Results showed the following: (a) For both drying treatments and for both germination and normal germination, desiccation sensitivity values were higher for measurements based on the water content of the embryo than for those of the seed. (b) For both drying treatments, desiccation sensitivity were higher for normal germination than for germination based on both the embryo and seed water contents. (c) Under the slow drying treatment and for measurements based on the seed water content, critical water content was...

Effects of Storage and Exogenous Ga3 on Lychee Seed Germination BABT
Ono,Elizabeth Orika; Leonel,Sarita; Duarte Filho,Jayme; Rodrigues,João Domingos.
The effects of storage time and exogenous gibberellic acid on lychee seeds germination were studied. The seeds were removed from ripe fruits, washed, dried, stored at 8°C for 0, 15 and 30 days, and soaked during 24 hours in water and GA3 at 50, 100 and 200 mg.L-1 solutions. As the storage period increased, the germination capacity was lost, and the seeds had a short germinability after 30-day storage period. Gibberellic acid had not significant effect on enhancing both the germination percentage and rate.

Germination, seedling performance, and root production after simulated partial seed predation of a threatened Atacama Desert shrub RChHN
Loayza,Andrea P; Gachon,Paloma R; García-Guzmán,Patricio; Carvajal,Danny E; Squeo,Francisco A.
BACKGROUND: Seed loss to predators is a common phenomenon across plant communities and an important determinant of plant recruitment. Although seed predators commonly destroy the entire seed, partial seed consumption has been reported for many species; however, the degree to which seed mass loss affects germination dynamics and survival of new individuals has been poorly documented. We simulated seed damage in natural conditions to examine how different levels of cotyledonary reserve removal affect germination dynamics and seedling performance of Myrcianthes coquimbensis (Myrtaceae), a threatened Atacama Desert shrub. The experiment combined two levels of seed maturity with three levels of seed mass loss. RESULTS: Removal of the cotyledon reserves and seed...

Storage, size and vigor of ‘Esther’ avocado seeds (Persea americana Mill.) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gálvez-Cendegui,Luisa; Peñaloza,Patricia; Oyanedel,Eduardo; Castro,Mónica.
Avocado seeds present high size variability. Larger seeds, such those of the ‘Esther’ variety, are preferred when nurse seeds are used. Even though they are considered recalcitrant seeds, they are stored for propagation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of three storage periods and three sizes of ‘Esther’ avocado seeds on vigor, in terms of electrolyte leakage, and seedling length and diameter. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized factorial design. The factors were time in storage (10, 30 and 100 d at 5 °C and 80% relative humidity) and seed size (small, medium and large). Electrolyte leakage was evaluated as a measure of seed vigor, growth and later development of the...
